Hypersthene is an iron-rich pyroxene in the same series of minerals as enstatite and bronzite. It is distinguished by its reddish iridescence, which is due to platy inclusions of goethite and hematite.
Often too dark to facet, it may be cut in cabochon instead to show the sparkling inclusions. Bronzite, a greenish brown variety with a bronze like lustre, is also a collector's stone - dark, slightly brittle, and not generally used in jewellery.
Most gem quality hypersthene is found in India, Norway, Greenland, Germany and United States. Bronzite is found in Austria.
