Hauyne forms part of lapis lazuli. Intergrown with other minerals, it is seldom found as individual crystals. Hauyne has perfect cleavage, making cutting difficult, so it is faceted primarily for collectors.

Hauyne is found as small rounded grains in volcanic rocks. Ancient volcanoes of Germany and Morocco are the best-known sources.
